This is a complicated subject with many different approaches and opinions. Designers are creative people looking to work in a creative environment. As an experienced design graduate you are a professional, and Starfish Recruitment will treat you as such. This section will not be giving condescending advice like 'arrive on time, be smart and don't dunk your biscuits;' we take that as given. This section has been divided into Agency Interviews and Client Interviews however if you treat both as the same you can't go far wrong.
Agency Interviews:
You need to stand out and make an impression. Be careful though, if you are a dedicated grunge and shuffle into an interview with three carrier bags full of loose drawings, you will have to be fantastically gifted to pull it off!
A decent recruitment consultant will put you at ease and encourage you to open up completely. The format should be friendly and informal. The consultant will be interested in your longer term goals, your core ability, strengths and weaknesses.
All consultants will have a 'mental list' of vacancies and will try and identify an immediate 'fit' with one or more of those. A Starfish Consultant will also be thinking more strategically. We build relationships with candidates, we follow their careers, become confidantes and sometimes they become our clients.
Please do not be fooled by the deliberate relaxed approach to agency interviews, remember you are still being assessed. Treat it as a trial for a 'real' interview. Whatever your personal opinion of recruitment consultants, be professional. Chewing gum (or in one case a McDonald's) will leave a lasting impression but will make a consultant think twice before presenting you to their favourite client!
Client Interviews:
Every design practice is different, their style, their work ethic/environment, personality and even their dress code is unique. Starfish Recruitment will prepare you for each individual client interview. We have developed long term relationships with our clients. We visit them often and will be able to give you 'inside knowledge' about how to prepare for and what to expect, at each interview.
If you really are exceptionally talented, Starfish will see through 'first impressions' and will fully prepare you for each individual client interview. |
